This Day In History - Fantasyland Expansion

Updated: Jun 5, 2020

This day history in 1958, Alice in Wonderland opened up and the Sailing Ship Columbia sailed for the first time.

The Alice in Wonderland that opened is not the ride that that we know and love today. Not only was it not in the same spot, but it was much weirder and creepier. The original ride had painted scenery and 2-D characters.

The ride is one of the only rides with a bonus scene at the end! It is also the only two story ride that is both indoors and outdoors for Disney. There were two updates to bring us to the ride we know and love today.

As for the Sailing Ship Columbia, it is a replica of the Columbia Rediviva, the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe. Though when it first set sail, there were no crew quarters.

During the day, the ship gives you a 12 minute ride along the Rivers of America, and at night plays an important role during the nighttime show Fantasmic!
