Avengers Campus Open Day Full Thoughts!

Updated: Jun 12, 2021

Today was the opening day of Avenger's Campus in Disney California Adventure. I was fortunate enough to take the day off and get a reservation to go. Getting the reservations was a marathon in itself (it took 8 hours), but that was only the beginning....

I live in San Diego, so I had to leave pretty early in order to even stand a chance at getting in. Since I had to leave so early, I had to stop on the Freeway to try to get a boarding pass for Web Slingers. Unfortunately, I stood no chance and had to continue on my journey with the disappointment.

Waiting for Avengers Campus

I arrived at Mickey & Friends at 7:30am and went straight to the standby line for Avengers Campus, which I arrived at 8:30....and waited...and waited.

The line began in front of Grizzly Falls, went down Hollywood and back, past Avenger's Campus and down the World of Color waiting area switching back 4 times, back to Jumping Jellyfish and into the Zephyr queue and then all the way back to Avenger's Campus. The wait ended up being 5 hours to get into the land.

The World of Color waiting area had no shade except for some umbrellas. Unfortunately the line would move you through under almost all of them. Out of the 20 or so umbrellas, I probably stood under 3 of them for a few minutes each.

While waiting, I ended up making friends with my line neighbors. They changed a little over time, but I met some fun people. At noon we ended up getting our second chance at Web Slingers boarding passes. Fortunately I was able to get a pass along with many others. Since I had also made friends, I was able to run and grab lunch without fear of losing my spot in line.

You are able to get into Avenger's Campus when your boarding pass is called for Web Slingers, however, my boarding group was high and the app estimated a 300 minute wait. Because of this, I decided to keep my spot in line to get into the land. Plus at this point, I was committed. There was no way I was leaving the line now.

Entering Avenger's Campus

Finally, at 1:30pm, 6 hours after I arrived at Mickey & Friends, I took my first steps into Avenger's Campus.

Of course it should come as no surprise that once I got in the land, there was more waiting and lines to be had. I skipped around those for now and just explored. Disney has proven they are the masters at creating immersive lands with amazing details and Avenger's Campus is no exception. There are so many places to take beautiful photos and your favorite superheroes all over to interact with and pretty regular shows happening.

Because it was opening day it was super crowded and I was already in the sun for hours, but I couldn't stop. I wasn't able to get any food reservations, but I was able to get a drink at Pym Tasting Lab, the X-Periment. It was a tequila based drink with mango and habanero. After such a long hot day, it was perfectly refreshing.

Web Slingers

After exploring the land and watching a couple of the shows, it was time for my Web Slingers reservation. Of course once my boarding group was called there was more waiting inside. But once I got through the queue, it went quick.

Once inside WEBB, we got to watch a pre-show where Peter Parker began to walk us through their open house. Things quickly started going wrong as the spider bots began to clone and their numbers quickly became overwhelming and they started wreaking havoc. I loved this little show and can't wait to watch it many more times and notice more details each time. It also has a lot of wonderful humor that you see in the Spiderman movies.

After the pre-show, we quickly made our way to the Web Slinger vehicles for the ride. Each vehicle can hold up to 4 people and you all work together to help Spiderman defeat the spider bots.

I was surprised with how physical the ride is. You are slinging webs from both arms and trying to do so as fast as you can. It doesn't take long for your muscles to start to complain. I don't know about you but quarantine has not helped my fitness, so my muscles were surprised by the physical activity. By the time the ride was over, my arms were sore and I was out of breath. But it was so much fun!

The technology for this ride is impressive. To think that you can just fling your arms out and webs are thrown in the exact direction you were aiming is amazing. I ended up riding alone and had just as much fun as if I were with friends. I also didn't feel like I missed out on anything beyond some extra points from the additional hands. I can't wait to ride again!

Terran Treats

After riding Web Slingers, I visited Web Suppliers. The store is very small but packed full of fun merchandise and so many details. Make sure to look around, especially up, if you ever visit.

Once I got my workout and quick shopping trip out of the way, I was starving. I had only had one alcoholic drink since lunch and it was now dinner time. Since mobile orders were gone in the morning, my options were limited. Terran Treats was the only place that allowed standby opening day. I didn't mind at all because Terran Treats was on my list of things to try in Avengers Campus. (Note: After opening day the Shawarma carts were standby as well as a standby line for Pym.)

I was able to order both the Sweet Spiral Ration and the Cosmic Cream Orb.

The Sweet Spiral Ration is a green churro in the shape of a spiral with pineapple sugar. It was a wonderful 'twist' on the traditional churro. I enjoyed both the texture and the flavor.

The Cosmic Cream Orb is a cream puff with a whipped raspberry cheesecake filling. While it wasn't as big as I expected, it was satisfying and unlike any other treat in Disneyland. Even though it is cheesecake flavored, it's more on the cream cheese end of the scale as opposed to a sweet cheesecake. The outside is more sweet than the filling.

After I had my treats, I continued to rest my feet and relax in the shade. After a long day of waiting in the sun, it was a pleasant change of pace. I was also waiting for the sun to set so I could see the land light up as the sun went down.

While I didn't wait until the sun was completely down, I was able to enjoy the land as it began to glow. I took one more walk through Avengers Campus before making my way out of the land and Disney California Adventure and started to head home. As much as I wanted to stay until closing, I was simply exhausted and wanted to get home.

Final Thoughts on Avengers Campus

While opening day was crowded, hot, and was spent mostly waiting in lines, Avengers Campus was still amazing. I can't wait to go again once things have calmed down. I am looking forward to trying some of the amazing eats at Pym Foods and have some Shawarma and wash it down with another drink from Pym Tasting Lab.

The shows are fun to watch and there are so many characters to meet. I look forward to seeing how the shows and characters will adapt as we further enter this new stage of the Marvel movies and shows. I also hope to be able to ride Web Slingers many more times and hopefully with some friends.

I hope you get the chance to visit Avengers Campus soon! What are you most looking forward to?
