It has been so long since I have been able to go out and see a movie in a theater. I knew that Cruella was one movie I couldn't wait to see. So I got dressed up and saw it opening night!
First of all, let me start by saying that:
I absolutely loved the movie.
With how much I loved the Maleficent live action, I was pretty sure Cruella was going to be good, but I also didn't want to get my hopes up too high just in case. 101 Dalmations isn't one of my favorite Disney movies, so I didn't know if Cruella would be a hit with me.
Thankfully it exceeded my expectations and was a hit, so much so that I'm watching it again next week. I am hoping to rewatch 101 Dalmations both the animated and live action before then.
I loved Cruella for many different reasons!
Emotional connection
The movie allowed me to make an emotional connection with Cruella. I began to understand her and how she came to be.
Characters
I not only fell in love with Cruella, but other characters as well. Horace and Jasper aren't just side characters, we get to know them on a deeper level and how they came to know Cruella. Can I just say that I was not expecting to love Horace so much.
Surprisingly Dalmatians aren't the only dogs we see in the movie. Finally, we meet some new people, my favorite of which is Artie, a sassy gay designer.
The Humor
While I shouldn't be surprised, I wasn't expecting it to have such a humor about it. There were so many moments where I truly was laughing out loud. While the movie was a little dark, I was expecting it to be more dark and less...spunky? I think that's the right word. I can't wait to watch it again and catch even more.
The Costumes
I can't say enough about the costumes. I love how they had a 70s vibe but felt modern at the same time. I also loved the grittiness of them. There were some gorgeous pieces that I fell in love with and I definitely need to watch it over and over again. Until then it will be hard to pick favorites.
The Music
Cruella had a wonderful soundtrack. Just like the costumes, they were a blend of 70s music as well as modern music. Being honest, I wasn't truly paying attention to the soundtrack beyond the fact that it was great. I definitely will be focusing on it when I rewatch the movie in a few days.
My favorite song was the modern take on "Cruella Devil." Just like "Once Upon a Dream" from the Maleficent movie, "Cruella Devil"took a darker, grittier take on the original song and I am living for it!
In case it wasn't obvious, I loved Cruella and highly recommend it. Have you seen it yet? What are your thoughts?
